Chemical Peels
George Dermatology offers both superficial and medium-depth chemical peels. The choice depends on your treatment goals, skin concerns, and ability to schedule time for the necessary healing.
Superficial Chemical Peels
George Dermatology offers the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance for a superficial chemical peel. Commonly called the “lunch time peel,” this effective and easy peel has little downtime. The combination of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and glycolic acids will help to improve your skin complexion, tone, and texture to reveal more radiant skin.
How does it work?
After cleaning your skin with our special Blue Peel Prep Solution our PA or nurse will then apply the Blue Peel to your face and neck. A mild burning sensation will occur that generally lasts only a few minutes. The procedure takes about 20 minutes. Our skin care professionals will advise you on how many peels are needed to give you the best result.
The Blue Peel works by forcing your dead skin cells up to the surface where they are then shed. At the same time it stimulates collagen production underneath your skin. The special ingredients of the peel, which include salicylic, glycolic, and lactic acids work to clean out your pores and refresh your skin cells.
What to expect after your peel?
Depending on the strength and depth of the peel, you will experience light swelling following the procedure. Within 2 to 3 days, your skin will begin to peel. This peeling continues over the next several days. The peeling is mild in nature and there is no downtime from it. By Days 7 to 10, your skin should be healed. After a treatment with Blue Peel Radiance, you will need to care for your skin to maximize and maintain results. The single most important thing to remember after any chemical peel is to wear sun protection (SPF 30 or higher) at all times. We recommend EltaMD sun screens. Be sure to ask us about these products which can also be purchased in our office.
How many peels do I need?
Though results can be seen with a single Blue Peel Radiance treatment, optimal results are usually achieved with a series of 4-6 peels. This will result in significant skin repair and give you a healthy glow to your skin. The peel works great not only as an active treatment, but also as a preventative treatment. Each peel can be repeated as often as every two weeks, if necessary, for damaged skin. Our skin care specialists will recommend a personalized skincare regimen to give you the best results.
How badly will I peel?
The skin peeling associated with the Blue Peel Radiance is a very light one. Peeling usually starts around days 2-3 after your peel. By days 7-10, your skin should be healed. The peeling is easily hidden by moisturizer. In some cases, the peel is virtually invisible.
How long is a treatment?
It’s quick! Application of the Blue Peel takes about 15-20 minutes. There is no downtime with the procedure. Most patients feel clean and refreshed immediately after the treatment is done.
Medium Chemical Peels
At George Dermatology, we offer MEDIUM-DEPTH chemical peels using a combination of TCA (trichloroacetic acid) and Jessner’s solution to improve the appearance of your skin. These deeper chemical peels have the ability to:
-
rejuvenate sun-damaged skin
-
fade brown spots like freckles as well as dark patches (melasma)
-
soften fine lines and wrinkles
-
reduce the appearance of acne scars
-
smooth skin
The results of the medium-depth peels are more significant and longer-lasting than superficial peels. In order to accomplish these improved results, the chemicals used penetrate deeper, resulting in longer downtimes of 7-14 days of redness and peeling. After a peel, a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and strict sun protective behaviors are mandatory.
